Dark Sparks is the follow-up EP to 2023's Sleaze Greaze by NJ musician and composer Mike Noordzy.
This second serving of instrumental alt-noir offers the same melodic intoxicants and hypnotic rhythms as its swampy predecessor but with a soft rip of romance lurking in the shadows. Drawing upon an unusual sonic palette, one's ears bask in the warm glory of the vibraphone, the trombone, the resonator guitar, upright bass, percussion, and that infamous agent of terror; the accordion. This unique combination of instruments and quirky compositions brew a fresh flavor of un-ironic exotica.
Drawing on his film music influences, (Elfman, Barry, Badalmenti) Noordzy's use of texture evokes a theater of the mind, staging rusty, dusty, lusty dramas starring desert mermaids and ballerina witches.

Slopera Haus. The first single, has a delightfully catchy new jack swing riff that seduces us into a (sl)opera house (haus) of questionable repute. 


Sad and Soggy. You're walking slowly in the rain, no umbrella, you kick an empty can by accident, in the distance you hear a mermaid scream, the sun comes out, it's warm under your wet clothes, you’re at peace with your own self-disgust.


Black SwanP. What starts as a mysterious Burt Bacharach-on-acid type of vibe soon devolves into a perverse bossa nova, concluding with a distorted contra alto clarinet and trombone noise orgy.


Broads. Making out in the backseat of a shitty car, parked along a dark road, with a deep sadness crackling just below the surface.


Sirene Soirciere. Loosely translates to "Mermaid Witch" in French. Somehow, that is all the explanation required.  

No stranger in the NJ music world, Mike is best known for his bass playing with a wide variety of jazz artists, his own bands Mothguts and El Noordzo, and, more recently, with Asbury Park indie songstress Renee Maskin. Rounding out the ensemble are Josh Siegel (resonator), Ian Young (trombone) and Jem Seidel (drums) who you may recognize as 3/4’s of New Brunswick’s beloved jazz-funk upstarts Rugburn. Born in a frozen swamp east of East St. Louis at exactly 11:59 PM during a lunar eclipse and raised by benevolent vampiric alligators, accordionist Frankie Midnight knows a thing or two about a thing or two. Little is known about vibraphonist Mary Mehalick, who wandered into the recording session muttering threats in an ancient Germanic dialect. Fearing personal injury, the lads agreed to let her play and the rest is, as they say, history.
